Around the Town by Emma Drissen As I write this, the sun is shining and it's pushing 50 degrees outside! As I looked at the calendar, Christmas is two weeks away! Santa will be at the Vermillion Theater for two more Saturdays, Dec. 11 and Dec. 18 from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m. The free movies run at 11 a.m. and 1 and 3 p.m. Many stores have extended hours and the downtown stores will be open from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 16, Dec. 20-23 and on Sundays from noon to 4 p.m.
Remember to purchase your Vermillion Bucks at the Chamber office for those last minute gifts and stocking stuffers. They come in denominations of $5, $10, $20 and $50. Vermillion Bucks keep our dollars working at home!
The boys Youth Basketball Tourney will be at the DakotaDome Dec. 11 and 12. The Chamber is still lining up volunteers along with the Park District.
December 31 is rapidly approaching. Spend your New Year's Eve with family and friends at the Coyote Student Center and the DakotaDome for a family oriented, non-alcoholic celebration. The festivities begin at 7:30 p.m. and conclude at midnight with a fireworks show.
Celebrate Vermillion has entertainment for all ages. Activities include a children's carnival, face painting, bouncy boxing, car racing games, swimming, miniature golf, bingo, a bridge tournament, music, dancing, karaoke and much more!
There will be a balloon drop with lots of prize filled balloons. Buttons will be sold for $2 that will allow free access to all activities.
Most of the costs have been underwritten by the following corporate sponsors: Community First Bank, CorTrust Bank, First Dakota National Bank, First National Bank in Vermillion, First National Bank of South Dakota in Yankton, Norwest Bank, Hy-Vee, Gateway and Polaris Industries.
The city of Vermillion and Clay County are providing funding for the fireworks show. For more information, contact Rick Haught at 605-677-5334. Join us as we Celebrate Vermillion and the arrival of 2000!
