Around the Town by Emma Drissen The days are dwindling down to a precious few! December is upon us and the holiday festivities are in full swing. Friday, Dec. 3 is the Candlelight Tour of Homes. This year's theme is "Christmas Scandia." Six homes, including the Austin- Whittemore House will be open from 6 to 9 p.m. Tickets are still available at Ashmore's, Nook 'n Cranny, Deb's Hallmark and Vermillion Beauty Shop. The tour is sponsored by the Clay County Historical Society and proceeds benefit the Austin-Whittemore House.
On Dec. 5 from 1 to 4:30 p.m., you can enjoy an afternoon of "Christmas at a Prairie Museum" at the W.H. Over Museum. The 32nd annual Christmas festival will feature music and dance groups, craft demonstrations, Parade of Trees decorated by different groups, lefse-making, bake sale and special displays of collections. The children's Discovery Room will offer origami ornament making and of course Santa Claus will be there! Check out the Museum Gift Shop for holiday ideas. Attendance to the festival is free.
Get ready for New Year's Eve! The "Celebrate Vermillion" family-oriented, non-alcoholic event will take place at the Coyote Student Center and the DakotaDome on Friday, Dec. 31 from 7:30 p.m. to midnight. Spend the last night of the millennium with family and friends as you enjoy entertainment and activities geared to all ages! The evening will culminate with a fireworks show at midnight! If you would like to volunteer to help and/or donate prizes for games, please call Rick Haught at 677-5334.
The Youth Basketball Tourney is being held at the DakotaDome on the weekends of Dec. 4 and 5 and Dec. 11 and 12. The tourney brings people to Vermillion from a large Midwest area. Volunteers are still needed for score-keepers and time clock keepers. If you would like to help out, please call the Chamber office at 624-5571 and we will schedule you for your preference. We can't emphasize enough how important volunteers are and how much you are all truly appreciated for your time and energy. We thank you all for giving of yourselves to help others.
Notice: All Chamber members are invited to an open board meeting, Thursday, Dec. 9 at 6:30 p.m. at the Chamber office. A vote will be taken on the changes made in the Chamber's by-laws. You are welcome to stop at the Chamber office during the week to read them and see the proposed changes.
Have a great week!
