Bucks defeat Tanagers 67-38 in season-opener by Jim Prosser The Vermillion Tanagers were downed by the Yankton Bucks 67-38 in boys basketball Dec. 7 at Yankton as the Tanagers shot just 33 percent from the field.
The season-opening loss gave VHS a record of 0-1 while Yankton varsity moved to 1-0.
�I think that some of our inexperience came out in this game but Yankton is a tough team,� said VHS Coach Troy Terronez. �They forced a lot of turnovers, pressured well and forced us to speed up our offense when we wanted to slow it down.�
The Tanagers fell behind 24-11 at the end of the first period, trailed 38-22 at halftime, and then trailed 50-25 after the third quarter.
VHS sank 4 of 9 three-point tries and connected on 6 of 14 free throw tries. The Tanagers made 10 of 30 from the field, while Yankton varsity was 18 of 38 from the field. Yankton varsity made 6 of 15 three-point tries and connected on 7 of 12 from the line.
Although defeated, the Tanagers had some individual bright spots.
�As we get familiar with the offense, it will start going in our direction,� Coach Terronez said. �We have the players, it is a matter of getting used to playing with each other.�
