Jr. high wrestlers compete in Vermillion Invite Dec. 18 The Vermillion Junior High Wrestling Invitational was held on Saturday, Dec. 18 at Vermillion High School with teams from Brandon Valley, Elk Point-Jefferson, Canton, Dakota Valley, West Central and Vermillion competing in the tournament.
Place winners for Vermillion in the tournament in the 7th/8th-grade division included:
Andy Hayner, 112-118 lbs., second place, 2-1 record; Kenny Mays, 125-142 lbs., third place, 1-2 record; Kellen Cusick, 149-170 lbs., first place, 3-0 record.
Place winner for Vermillion in the tournament in the 9th-grade division included:
Tyler Zimmerman, 103-119 lbs., second, 2-1 record; Matt Varns, 125-137 lbs., second place, 4-1 record; Taylor Birgen, 165-189 lbs., second place, 2-1 record; Brad Simons, 200-224 lbs., second place, 2-1 record.
Casey O'Connor, Vermillion Middle School wrestling coach, said, "We competed very well in the tournament and we were happy with performances of the individual wrestlers. Our young guys continue to improve every time we step on the mat. This is the first time we held our tournament so early in the year and everyone was very happy with the format. It should be even bigger and better next year."
The 7th- and 8th-grade wrestlers' next action will be at the Mitchell Invitational Wrestling Tournament on Saturday, Jan. 8 at 10:30 a.m.
