JV Tanagers slip by the Harrisburg Tigers by Jim Prosser In a game that was closer than the score indicated, the Vermillion Tanagers were topped by the Harrisburg Tigers 44-31 in boys basketball Dec. 10 at Harrisburg.
VHS had been within three going into the fourth period.
�Our defensive intensity improved greatly,� said VHS Coach Troy Terronez. �To hold a team to 11 field goals is a great accomplishment. Now, we need to be patient on offense and take the high percentage shots.�
The Harrisburg varsity jumped in front 8-4 after the first quarter, and held an edge of 10-7 in the second quarter. VHS had an advantage of 13-9 in the third period to shave the deficit to only 27-24 going into the final period.
The loss dropped VHS to a record of 0-2, while Harrisburg varsity improved to 0-1.
VHS made 1 of 12 three-point tries and hit 8 of 14 free throw attempts. The Tanagers made 10 of 33 field goal attempts, while the Harrisburg varsity was 10 of 27 from the field. The Harrisburg varsity made 1 of 10 three-pointers and connected on 21 of 30 free throw attempts.
The Tanagers had several noteworthy individual efforts in defeat.
�We had a number of players contribute,� Coach Terronez said. �Tim Russell and Brett Hogen came off the bench to provide some solid post defense as well as an inside game offensively. Our seniors also gave us a great performance defensively, pulling us within one point in the fourth quarter. Bo Nelson scored 12 points, had 1 steal and pulled down 9 rebounds.�
