Mary A. Brown, 94, of Vermillion, died Monday, Dec. 20, 1999 at the Sioux Valley Vermillion Care Center.
Mary Marko was born Nov. 21, 1905 in Webster to Frank and Catherine Marko. She was the second oldest of 11 children. She attended Webster Public Schools, and the Aberdeen School of Commerce. She married Milton G. Brown on Nov. 21, 1927 in San Diego, CA. They owned and operated Brown's Paint and Flooring in Aberdeen from 1935 until they retired in 1968. Her husband died in 1994. She spent the last years as a resident of the Sioux Valley Vermillion Care Center.
She was a member of the Sacred Heart Parish and Altar Society in Aberdeen, as well as the Aberdeen Credit Women's Association. She was a past chairman of the Brown County Easter Seals Association, and a past member of both the Aberdeen Brown Country Club, and the Prairie Wood Country Club in Aberdeen. She was also a member of the Catholic Daughters of America.
She is survived by three sons: Norman and his wife Peggy of Aberdeen, Wayne and his wife Roselle of Denver, CO, and Ralph and his wife Lynne of Vermillion; one daughter: Mrs. Emmett (LaVonne) Brennan of Overland Park, KS; a brother and a sister; 18 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren; and a great-great grandson.
Funeral services will be Tuesday, Dec. 28, at 10 a.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Aberdeen. Burial will follow in the Sunset Memorial Gardens Cemetery in Aberdeen. A prayer service will be held on Monday, Dec. 27, at 7 p.m. at the Schriver's Memorial Mortuary in Aberdeen. Hansen Funeral Home in Vermillion is in charge of local arrangements.
Funeral services for Michael L. Hughes, 51, were held Dec. 14, 1999, at the Community Church of Joy in Glendale, AZ. He died Dec. 11, 1999, after a courageous two-year battle with cancer.
A native of Vermillion, Mike graduated from Vermillion High School in 1967, and went on to graduate from Black Hills State College. He was a teacher and coach at Spearfish High School prior to moving to Phoenix, AZ, in 1979, where he continued to teach and coach at Greenway High School.
Mike is survived by his wife: Sylvia, his 12-year-old daughter: Hayley, his father: Donald Hughes, his brothers: Roger, Terry, Richard and Tim Hughes, and his sisters: June Seney, Joellen (Toots) Solomon, and Evangeline (Sis) Patterson.
He was preceded in death by his mother: Opal (Dee Dee) Hughes.
