Olson murder trial slated for April in Clay County by M. Jill Karolevitz A date has been set for the trial of Daren Olson, who has been charged with the murder of his 5-month-old daughter, Jordyn.
The trial will be April 6-12 at the Clay County Courthouse. Circuit Court Judge Arthur L. Rusch will preside.
Olson, 23, was arrested Oct. 14 in Vermillion after his daughter was taken to Sioux Valley Hospital in Sioux Falls where she died Oct. 11 due to head trauma injuries she allegedly received at home.
Olson, who had been an officer for USD Public Safety, has been charged with two counts: 1) murder in the second degree, a Class B felony, and 2) manslaughter in the first degree, a Class 1 felony. He waived his right to a preliminary hearing and pleaded not guilty Oct. 15. He was later released to his father�s custody at Groton on a $25,000 bond.
Assistant Attorney General Ron Campbell will prosecute the case, assisted by Assistant Attorney General Gay Tollefson and Clay County State�s Attorney Tami Bern. A gag order, requested by Olson�s attorney Sidney B. Strange of Sioux Falls, was granted by Judge Rusch to �prohibit the prosecution and defense counsel from discussing any aspect of the prosecution of this matter with representatives of the media or with persons who have contacts with media while this case is at issue.�
The baby�s mother, Maria, is a Vermillion police officer.
