Teams needed for Relay for Life The second annual American Cancer Society Relay for Life will be held Saturday, Feb. 26 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. in the DakotaDome.
Committee chair people include: Teresa Solberg, Don Peterson, Diane Duin, Gwen Mount, Becky Rider, Elaine Larson, Wess Pravecek and Janet Mount. It is a community effort involving The University of South Dakota and the cities of Vermillion, Wakonda and Elk Point, as well as all points in between. Money is raised by donations, teams, and luminary sales.
The fund raising has just started and the events partners so far are: the Vermillion Title Company, the Civic Council, Mount Truck and Rasmussen Motors. Several teams have also signed up including the USD School of Nursing, the Civic Council and USD Credit Union. More teams are needed. These are also people who want to be on a team, but not enough people or money to have one. They should contact a chairperson and resources will be pooled to get a team together.
The first annual Relay for Life was held at the DakotaDome on April 26, 1999 and raised more than $7,000. The relay was organized by USD's Special Events class. The February relay will be a joint effort between USD and the surrounding area.
Luminaries are a tribute to those affected with cancer. A $5 donation allows a person to put a name on a luminary. If the person has survived it will say "In honor of," if the person has lost the battle it will say "In memory of" and then the name. Luminaries will be for sale around town and can be purchased several places including USD Credit Union, CorTrust Bank, the Civic Council, Coldwell Bankers Dakota Realty, and Hy-Vee.
Look for samples to start appearing on local retail store counters. As people walk around the track they read and remember all those people who have fought the fight. It's not a race, it is not how many times you walk around the track. You can go as fast or as slow as you want. Participation is the key. At a predetermined time the lights will be dimmed and the luminaries will be lit and the names on the luminaries will be read.
The goal of the February 2000 DakotaDome Relay for Life is 15 teams and $20,000. Teams are needed as well as more contributing partners. Each team will consist of up to 15 people. The teams will set up campsites and enjoy the day. There will be activities or entertainment going on during the entire event. There will also be a smart shop set up to help you learn more about prevention and treatment.
Of the money raised, 40 percent will go to research. Of that 40 percent a maximum of 25 percent will be administrative costs. The remaining 60 percent is to be used for programs such as Road to Recovery, and other outreach and educational programs.
