Vermillion Tanager JV outpaced by SSC 61-39 by Jim Prosser In a game that was much closer than the final score indicated, the Vermillion JV Tanagers were shot down by the South Sioux City Cardinals 61-39 in boys basketball Dec. 17 at South Sioux City, NE.
VHS was down just one at halftime.
�Tim Russell had another great offensive performance scoring 19 points while playing in only two quarters,� said VHS Coach Lance Luitjens.
In the third period, SSC, leading 28-25 at 2:08 into the quarter, went on a 14-0 run to outdistance Vermillion and decide the outcome.
The loss was aided by the Tanagers committing 23 turnovers.
The Cardinals ended up hot from three-point range, canning 7 of 13 from long distance.
The Tanagers fell behind 14-8 at the end of the first period, trailed 20-19 at halftime, and then trailed 42-25 going into the final period.
VHS saw its record fall to 1-2, while the SSC junior varsity upped its mark to 3-0.
VHS connected on 5 of 12 free throw tries. The Tanagers sank 14 of 32 from the field, while the SSC junior varsity was 18 of 35 from the field. The Cardinals made 4 of 6 free throw tries.
Even with the final margin, the Tanagers had some solid individual efforts.
�Freshman Nick Olson also played a good ?inside� game,� Coach Luitjens said.
