WinterFest '99 planned Dec. 4-12 South Dakota Public Television will dazzle in December with holiday magic, compelling documentaries and thrilling music all part of the WinterFest '99 pledge drive.
SDPTV will be making music Dec. 4-12 for WinterFest with everything from inspirational favorites like Lawrence Welk (Dec. 4, 5 and 12) to new and exciting acts like the Dave Matthews Band (Dec. 4) and Jewel (Dec. 9), plus a dash of salsa with Celia Cruz (Dec. 10). We'll journey back a few decades for Doo Wop 50 (Dec. 4 and 8), and head for the New Age with A Night with Secret Garden (Dec. 11).
South Dakota will be in the spotlight during WinterFest, too. WinterFest features two dynamic SDPTV documentaries American Ace: The Joe Foss Story (Dec. 5), and Wild Horses: An American Romance (Dec. 11). Two intrepid explorers who crossed South Dakota as well as much of the American West are back in Lewis & Clark: Journey of the Corps of Discovery (two parts, Dec. 6-7). More of the state's history comes to light with the story of a unique group of pioneers in The Germans from Russia (Dec. 7).
Two Great Performances specials will delight the eye and the ear: Andrea Bocelli: Sacred Aries (Dec. 9), featuring the appealing European tenor; and Burn the Floor (Dec. 11), a breathtaking exploration of the world of dance. One of the most popular and enduring musicals ever is on the air with Les Miserables in Concert (Dec. 5).
Two viewer favorites are returning, too: Nature John Denver: Let This Be a Voice (Dec. 10), and the Peter, Paul, & Mary Holiday Concert (Dec. 12).
December should be a season of joy, so laughter is a big part of WinterFest. Enjoy the antics in It's a Wonderful Red Green Christmas (Dec. 6), plus some hilarious British comedies (Dec. 11).
WinterFest keeps kids in mind, too, with a special featuring the lovable Teletubbies in the Snow (Dec. 8), plus a triple feature starring America's No. 1 kids' hit Arthur (Dec. 9).
The drive also explores the joys of old age in a compelling documentary: Grow Old Along with Me (Dec. 4).
A special Online Night encouraging viewers to use their computers to pledge online will be Friday, Dec. 10.
A past master and a rising young South Dakota star will be featured when SDPTV airs the American Masters special, Norman Rockwell: Painting America (Dec. 12), featuring one of America's most beloved painters. During breaks, Joshua Spies, one of the nation's leading wildlife artists, will talk about his art. A signed and numbered, framed and matted Spies print will be auctioned during the drive.
Money raised during pledge drive is used to buy and provide programming services.
