City, county and state highway workers had to break out their snowplows from a long winter slumber Wednesday morning to clear slush and snow from Clay County roads. Traffic heading east into Vermillion waited patiently as two plows cleared the south lane of Cherry Street. A winter weather advisory was issued for the region Wednesday morning. Rain started falling before dawn, then changed to snow, causing slushy conditions on area streets and highways. The National Weather Service predicted the snowfall to end later Wednesday to be replaced by a strong north wind and colder temperatures.
