FSA Notes By Keith Zanter Crop Disaster Program Assistance
The Crop Disaster Program (CDP) assistance is for farmers who suffered losses to 1999 crops due to natural disasters. The losses must be directly attributed to adverse weather and related conditions. The program covers losses on insured crops (including prevented planting), uninsured crops and noninsurable crops.
Farmers with eligible losses of insured crops will be compensated at 65 percent of crop insurance market price and uninsured crops will be compensated at 60 percent. Noninsurable crops will be compensated at 65 percent of the five-year National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS) price.
Payments to farmers will be prorated after all applications are reviewed. An advance payment of 35 percent will be issued.
Sign up began on Dec. 13 and ends Feb. 25. Please call 605-624-7060 Ext. #2 for an appointment or to receive additional information.
County Committee Election
The Clay County Committee election for Local Administration Area (LAA) 1 will be held this year on March 6. LAA 1 is made up of Star, Bethel, Meckling and Spirit Mound Townships. Eligible voters have the right to nominate candidate(s) of their choice by petition. Blank petitions may be obtained at the county FSA office. Each petition submitted must be signed by the nominee and postmarked or delivered to the Clay County FSA Office no later than Jan. 21.
Persons nominated should currently have an interest in a farm or ranch operation. A person is eligible to be a committee member if the person lives in the community in which that individual is eligible to vote. We encourage women and/or minorities to become involved in the election process from nominating to voting. A list of eligible voters for this election is available at the county FSA office.
Dates To Remember
The office will be closed on Jan. 17 in observance of Martin Luther King Jr.'s birthday.
