Individual efforts highlight big Tanager varsity victory by Jim Prosser The Vermillion Tanagers overpowered the Bon Homme Cavaliers 70-44 in boys basketball Jan. 11 at Tyndall in a win keyed by a 22-8 third-quarter run.
Vermillions Bo Nelson shot 15 of 20 from the field for 33 points and grabbed 10 rebounds.
Bo did an outstanding job of attacking the basket and looking to score, said VHS Coach Troy Terronez. Not only did he establish an inside game, but he stepped out on the perimeter and hit some threes. This makes him difficult to defend.
The Tanagers fell behind 17-13 after the opening period, led 37-21 after the second quarter, and then led 59-29 going into the final period.
In the second quarter, the team got aggressive with the press to force turnovers, which turned into lay-ups for us at the other end, said Coach Terronez. We worked together as a team, located the hot hand and found out what it takes to win.
VHS improved its record to 1-3, while the BHS varsity dropped to 1-5.
VHS connected on 4 of 10 three-point tries and made 12 of 23 from the line. The Tanagers made 27 of 56 field goal attempts, while the BHS varsity was 15 of 45 from the field. BHS hit 3 of 6 three-point attempts and hit 5 of 17 free throw attempts.
A number of excellent individual efforts highlighted the win.
Cullen Iverson controlled the tempo at the point guard position with 8 points, 7 rebounds, 7 assists and only 2 turnovers, Coach Terronez said. He also provided great leadership on the court. Derrick Brown sparked us with intense defense. The turnovers he forced converted to fast break opportunities, which we needed to regain the lead after our slow defensive performance in the first quarter. Brett Hogen added 10 points and another solid performance. He has been playing well consistently on the offensive and defensive ends.
