JV volleyball team wins Southeast Area Classic The Vermillion Tanagers junior varsity volleyball team won its division at the Southeast Area Volleyball Classic held at Vermillion High School on Wednesday, Dec. 29. The young Tanagers defeated Lennox (15-7, 15-11), Harrisburg (15-6, 15-1), and West Central (15-11, 15-5) to win the tournament.
"We really played well throughout the entire day," said Coach Chris Fehring. "We beat two teams we had played previously in the season (Lennox and Harrisburg) and then beat West Central to cap off a great day. It was especially pleasing to win this tournament on our home court."
Individual statistics for the tournament included the following: Ashley Bjorkman (12 service points, six aces, 14 kills and three digs); Meggie Donnelly (6 service points, two aces, 30 assists, three kills, one block); Karen Sorensen (18 service points, three aces, one kill); Katie Carlson (24 service points, four aces, one dig); Tessa Tuetken (one assist, two kills, 1 service point); Dru Vankley (two kills); Abbey Mattson (one kill, three blocks, one dig, 2 service points, one ace); Ashley Thompson (6 service points, one kill, one block, one ace, four digs); Leslie Larson (17 service points, six aces, 10 kills, six blocks); Carey Engstrom (4 service points, seven kills, two assists, two blocks).
The young Tanagers upped their season record to 10-4 with the wins in the Southeast Area Classic. The Tanagers were back in action on Jan. 4 in Madison for a dual match, hosted Viborg on Jan. 6, and will travel to Dakota Valley on Jan. 10.
