Knights rally to topple Tanagers by Jim Prosser The Vermillion JV Tanagers ended up on the wrong side of a second-half rally and were topped by the Sioux Falls O�Gorman Knights 44-36 in boys basketball Jan. 15 at Sioux Falls.
VHS had led by five at halftime.
Brett Hogen scored 10 points.
�We really missed Brett Hogen in the second half,� said VHS Coach Lance Luitjens. �He was our go-to guy, scoring all of his 10 points in the first two quarters.�
The Tanagers led 14-10 after the opening period, went into the locker room up 28-23 at halftime, and then trailed 34-29 after the third period.
�The kids played hard; we just made too many mistakes in the second half,� said Coach Luitjens.
In the third quarter, O�Gorman had an 11-0 run led by Kyle Fuller.
�Our third quarter was the difference,� Coach Luitjens said. �We just couldn�t get into a rhythm offensively.�
VHS saw its record fall to 3-4, while O�Gorman upped its mark to 4-2.
VHS connected on 2 of 10 three-point attempts and connected on 6 of 9 from the line. The Tanagers sank 16 of 42 field goal attempts, while O�Gorman was 17 of 38 from the field. O�Gorman sank 0 of 2 three-point attempts and made 10 of 14 free throw attempts.
Even with the loss, the Tanagers had several good individual efforts.
�Adam Brooks had another solid game scoring 8 points in the first quarter coupled with 3 steals,� Coach Luitjens said.
