Mary Lou Christopherson is USD Employee of Month Knowledge, experience and an encouraging personality have earned Mary Lou Christopherson of Vermillion the January Career Service Employee of the Month Award at The University of South Dakota.
Christopherson, office supervisor for USD Residential Life since 1997, was honored during a ceremony Jan. 5 in the Lincoln-Roosevelt Room at the Coyote Student Center. USD President James W. Abbot presented Christopherson with a plaque and a check.
"It's a great group to work with here in Residential Life, I just couldn't ask for better people to work with," said Christopherson. "My job also puts me in contact with a lot of departments and student groups on and off-campus and I enjoy dealing with all those people."
Von Stange, director of Residential Life, nominated Christopherson based on her leadership skills and job performance.
"Mary Lou assumed the responsibilities of office supervisor upon the retirement of our former administrative assistant. Her responsibility as office supervisor is to pay accounts, process vouchers, hire and train student staff, and supervise the secretarial staff. When she is given a task, you can rest assured it will be done."
Christopherson is clearly seen as the leader of the Residential Life Office, Stange said.
"Mary Lou establishes positive relationships with staff and students," he said. "She is assertive and candid, but also diplomatic and encouraging. She is integral in training students regarding proper procedures for spending funds, purchasing items, contracting lecturers and other organizational issues. It is clear that Mary Lou is confident and competent in what she does.
"She sets the tempo and demeanor of the office, and everything that happens is a result of her direction and leadership," Stange continued. "For all Mary Lou does, she is deserving. Residential Life is very thrilled to have her as part of our team."
Christopherson, originally of Howard, began working at USD in August 1990. She and her husband, David, have four children and two grandchildren.
