Poor shooting plagues Tanagers; Beresford defeats Vermillion 73-52 by Jim Prosser The Vermillion Tanagers were downed by the Beresford Watchdogs 73-52 in boys basketball Jan. 14 at home as the Tanagers shot just 27 percent from the field.
Jordan Thompson picked up on the offensive end with 10 points, and Cullen Iverson followed with 9 points and 6 rebounds. Todd Anderson came off the bench to chip in an additional 8 points while grabbing 6 rebounds.
BHS jumped in front 15-7 after the first quarter, and held an edge of 22-12 in the second quarter. VHS had an advantage of 13-12 in the third period to cut the deficit to 49-32 going into the final period.
�Offensively, we are starting to score the number of points necessary to win,� said VHS Coach Troy Terronez. �However, we need to stay focused on the defensive end. Our defense can force turnovers to spark the offense, and that is what we need.�
In the opening quarter, Beresford�s Jon Sorensen scored 7 points, matching Vermillion�s team score, and every starter for the Watchdogs scored.
In the second quarter, Beresford�s Matt Semmler led a 22 point onslaught scoring 10 of the quarter�s points.
VHS saw its record fall to 1-4, while BHS upped its mark to 6-0.
VHS hit 7 of 15 three-point tries and sank 9 of 16 from the line. The Tanagers made 11 of 41 field goal attempts, while BHS was 27 of 50 from the field. BHS sank 1 of 3 three-pointers and hit 16 of 25 free throw tries.
