Redbirds win consolation at Beresford tournament Vermillion's Redbird eighth-grade A team did well at the Beresford Invitational Basketball Tournament on Saturday, Jan. 22.
The Redbirds fell to Alcester-Hudson 30-27 in a game which had Vermillion Middle School leading at every quarter stop 9-5,15-13, and 25-15, only to be outscored 15-2 in the fourth when a furious scrambling defense and a 7-point outburst by Craig Doty of A-H overcame the lead and sent Vermillion to a 0-3 season record.
Vermillion played Beresford in the consolation game. They led the "Watchdog Pups" 10-7 and 21-17 at the first two quarter stops, then fell behind 27-25 at the end of the third. The Redbirds trailed throughout the fourth quarter, showing a 3-point deficit with six seconds left on the clock when Jared Burcham fired up a long range shot to tie the score. Trevor Garrett then stole the in-bounds pass and made a jump shot basket at the buzzer to salvage a hard-fought victory 35-33.
The eighth-grade Redbirds now register 1-3 on their record.

"Burcham, Scheidel and Brown gave a solid performance on defense and aided our offensive game plan," he said. "In the Alcester game, we executed our offense well during the whole game. We just didn't get the ball to drop through the hoop in the final quarter. The second game heroics at the end of the game is a great boost to our confidence and will give us something to build on in future games."
