Tanager gymnasts host first Winter Wonderland Invite

Tanager gymnasts host first Winter Wonderland Invite The Tanager gymnastics team hosted its first annual Winter Wonderland Invitational at the Vermillion High School gym on Thursday, Dec. 30, 1999 the last local gymnastic competition of the 20th century!

Five schools were represented at the meet Vermillion, Milbank, Clark, West Central and Chamberlain. The VHS gym was decorated in a holiday motif with garlands and bows at the judges' and scorers' tables and a large Christmas tree covered with silver ornaments, to create a festive atmosphere for the holiday season.

Coach Mark Upward instituted the meet and was aided by his family and assistant coaches in preparing the gym.

With nearly 60 gymnasts and a necessary five rotation format, the meet was completed in two and a half hours and included a special fun contest to determine who could maintain a handstand for the longest period of time without "crumbling."

Each grade level competed and the winners were: seventh grade Sarah Christopherson (V) 16.93 sec.; eighth grade Michelle Person (C) 4.1 sec.; freshman Gerrianne Cressman (WC) 37.87 sec.; sophomore Amber Reisdorph (V) 38.51 sec.; junior Amy Evangelisto (Ch) 23.03 sec.; and senior Terri Upward (V) 44 sec. flat. Each winner was presented a teddy bear for a prize and Terri also received a trophy as the "grand champion."

The top 10 scorers in each of the four events and all-around were recognized, with the first six being awarded a place medal. The final team results were: Vermillion 107.70; Milbank 105.95; Clark 105.7; West Central 103.00; and Chamberlain 101.90.
