USD men notch 13th win; travel to ND this weekend The South Dakota men's basketball team notched their 13th consecutive win with a 78-62 victory over Nebraska-Omaha on Jan. 9.
The Coyotes, who improved their North Central Conference record to 4-0, posted an 86-49 win over Northern Colorado on Saturday, Jan. 8.
USD has never started a season 13-0. The Coyotes are at North Dakota and North Dakota State Friday and Saturday.
The Coyotes, who moved to No. 5 in the latest NABC/Division II poll, shot 62.0 percent from the field (31-50) against Nebraska-Omaha.
Nathan Blessen led the way by setting a school-record for field goal percentage going 13-for-13 en route to a game-high 29 points. The NCC record (based on attempts) is held by North Dakota State's Lance Berwald who was 20-for-20 against Augustana in 1984. Jeremy Kudera had 20 points and Jason Barrow finished with 17.
Kudera was tops in rebounds with eight. Nate Tibbetts added six points and eight assists. Ben Ries also dished out eight assists along with three points.
USD, which led in rebounds, 29-22, held a 38-31 halftime lead. In the second half, the Coyotes built their margin to 19 points at 55-36 with 13:30 left to play. The closest the Mavericks came was 11 points at 64-53 with 5:49 left.
Against Northern Colorado, the Coyotes took a 42-19 halftime lead. USD shot 50 percent from the field hitting 31 of 62. The Bears were held to 35.2 percent shooting and UNC committed 20 turnovers. USD also enjoyed a 44-27 advantage in rebounds.
USD landed four players in double scoring figures. Blessen led the way with 21 points. Eric Hickenbottom had 14 points, followed by Barrow with 13 and 10 for Kudera. Barrow pulled down a game-high 12 rebounds. Ries, Seth Ahrendt and Lamarr Butler-Parker scored six points apiece.
