Vermillion JV defeats Beresford Watchdogs by Jim Prosser The Vermillion JV Tanagers downed the Beresford Watchdogs 48-35 in boys basketball Jan. 14 at Vermillion in a win carried by a strong first quarter.
Tim Russell scored 18 points in two quarters of play.
�Tim Russell played like he is capable again, showing needed leadership on the JV squad,� said VHS Coach Lance Luitjens.
The Tanagers jumped ahead 18-5 after the first quarter, led 29-19 after the second period, and then held a lead of 41-28 going into the fourth quarter.
Both sides were plagued by turnovers, with the Tanagers turning it over 21 times, and the Watchdogs committing 22 turnovers.
�I thought we came out and played aggressively on the defensive end,� said Coach Luitjens. �We also had some kids step up on the offensive end as well.�
VHS improved its record to 3-3, while BHS dropped to a 1-3 record.
VHS sank 2 of 9 three-point attempts and made 5 of 8 from the line. The Tanagers sank 17 of 41 field goal attempts, while BHS was 11 of 34 from the field. BHS sank 3 of 11 three-point tries and sank 4 of 14 free throw tries.
The Tanagers had some excellent individual efforts in the win.
�Adam Brooks was the key defensively,� Coach Luitjens said. �He had 5 steals and gave us the spark we needed.�
