Big second half helps lift USD women to win South Dakota improved its record to 10-8 and 3-6 in the North Central Conference with a 77-64 win over Minnesota State-Mankato last Saturday.
The win came following a 71-68 setback Friday to St. Cloud State.
Against MSU-Mankato, the Coyotes pulled away from a 36-36 halftime deadlock by outscoring the Mavericks, 41-28, in the second half. USD shot 49.1 percent for the game compared to 36.4 for MSU-Mankato. The Coyotes also led in rebounds, 41-33.
Kelly Koepp led all players with 24 points and nine rebounds. Nicole Jaycox had 18 points fueled by four 3-point field goals. Julia Frie and Heather Nelson finished with 15 and 10 points, respectively. South Dakota came up short to St. Cloud State. In the second half, the Coyotes fell behind by 16 points at 59-43 with 10:01 left. But, USD rallied and came within 1 point at 68-67 with 10 seconds showing. The Huskies then used free throws to hold off the Coyotes.
The Coyotes, who shot 41.4 percent, were led by Frie's 23 points and nine rebounds. Nelson had 18 points and Koepp finished with 11. USD was outrebounded, 44-42, led by Nelson's 11 boards.
