Coyotes sweep Regis in baseball opener South Dakota opened the 2000 baseball season on a positive note with a doubleheader sweep over Regis University Sunday in Denver, CO by the scores of 7-4 in the first game and 8-1 in the second game.
The Coyotes are at Concordia University in Seward, NE on Saturday and Sunday, Feb. 26-27. Regis fell to 1-10 on the season.
In the first game against Regis, the Coyotes banged out eight hits led by Derek Huxford, who went 3-for-4 with three RBI. Kyle Thousand was 3-for-3, and Josh Kuecker was 2-for-4 with a three-run home run in the first inning. Kuecker was the winnng pitcher allowing six hits. John Brunswold relieved Kuecker with two outs in the seventh.
In the second game that was a nine inning contest, winning pitcher Matt McDermott went eight innings allowing only four hits with seven strikeouts and three walks. Ryan Goodwin pitched the ninth inning. The Coyotes, who took a 4-0 lead with four runs in the fourth inning, collected 10 hits. Thousand paced USD going 2-for-4 with three RBI. Dustin Moore and Rob Miller had two hits apiece.
