Luminary sales help raise money for Relay for Life The American Cancer Society DakotaDome Relay for Life is in full swing.
The Relay for Life will take place at the DakotaDome on Saturday, Feb. 26 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. It is a cooperative effort with The University of South Dakota and the community.
The event is not just a fund raiser but a chance to bring together people who have been affected by cancer. Anyone who is a cancer survivor is invited to join other survivors to start the day.
A major part of the relay are the luminaries, white bags that can be purchased for $5 each. With each purchase you are putting a name on the bag "in honor of" or "in memory of" someone who has been diagnosed with cancer. If you wish to decorate the bag in some way with a picture or a story you are welcome to, or you can just put on the name.
The community is invited to come at 4 p.m. when the lights will be dimmed in the Dome and all the names from the bags will be read.
Luminaries can be purchased from Gwen Mount, Ruth Brunick or at the Civic Council, Clay County Abstract and Title Co., CorTrust Bank, Coldwell Bankers Dakota Realty, USD Federal Credit Union and Hy-Vee.
Teams are being formed. To date there are 23 registered, but there is room for many more. Watch the Plain Talk next week to get a full update on the current teams, and to learn how you can start a team of your own.
If you are a survivor and would be able to join others at 10 a.m. to start the relay or for more information please contact Wess Pravecek at 624-5352 or 677-6418, or Janet Mount at 624-9373.
