Madison Bulldogs edge Vermillion JV Tanagers by Jim Prosser The Vermillion JV Tanagers fell short in a second-half comeback and were edged by the Madison Bulldogs 56-55 in boys basketball Feb. 18 at Vermillion as the Tanagers shot just 33 percent from the field.
VHS had trailed by 11 at halftime.
Jon Brooks scored 18 points. He made 17 of those points in the second half.
�Freshman Jon Brooks had a sensational second half,� said VHS Coach Lance Luitjens. �He needs to look to score more often.�
MHS jumped in front 13-11 after the first quarter, and held an edge of 19-10 in the second quarter. VHS had an advantage of 17-8 in the third period to shave the deficit to only 40-38 going into the final period.
Both teams were sharp from three-point range, with the Tanagers 8 of 12 and the Bulldogs 7 of 11.
�If it weren�t for our defensive lapse in the first half, we would have won the game,� said Coach Luitjens. �The kids showed a ton of heart to never give up after being down 15.�
In the third period, Jon Brooks made three 3-pointers to bring the score within 2 going into the fourth period.
In the last quarter, Jon Brooks made two 3-point goals. Eric Rickord and Jeremi Cowman each had a 3-pointer and Cowman was fouled on a 3 point attempt making 2 of 3 with 1 second on the clock.
VHS saw its record fall to 8-9, while MHS upped its mark to 14-2.
VHS sank 7 of 9 free throw attempts. The Tanagers sank 12 of 36 field goal attempts, while MHS was 16 of 35 from the field. The Bulldogs hit 3 of 9 free throw attempts.
The Tanagers had some excellent individual performances in defeat.
�Matt Bedard had a nice first half inside scoring 7 points in a very physical ball game,� Coach Luitjens said.
