Strong first half boosts Vermillion JV to victory by Jim Prosser The Vermillion JV Tanagers downed the Alcester-Hudson junior varsity Cubs 44-33 in boys basketball Jan. 25 at Vermillion in a win ignited by a strong first half.
�Brett Hogen really came to play tonight, dominating the first half with 18 of our 29 points,� said VHS Coach Lance Luitjens. �That�s the best we�ve played all year in the first half. The guys really played together as a team.�
The Tanagers jumped in front 12-6 at the end of the first period, went into the locker room up 29-13 at halftime, and then held a lead of 31-25 after the third quarter.
VHS improved its record to 4-5, while Alcester-Hudson dropped to 5-3.
VHS sank 0 of 2 three-pointers and hit 14 of 18 free throw tries. The Tanagers hit 15 of 35 from the field, while Alcester-Hudson was 13 of 39 from the field. Alcester-Hudson made 1 of 4 three-point tries and hit 4 of 10 free throw tries.
A number of excellent individual efforts highlighted the win.
�I was pleased with Jeremy Cowman�s performance tonight,� Coach Luitjens said. �He really came out and played like a leader.�
