Tanager JV loses in game's last seconds by Jim Prosser Canton�s J. King made a 3-point basket with about 9 seconds left in the game as the Vermillion JV Tanagers lost a second-half lead and lost a tough one to the Canton C-Hawks 44-41 in boys basketball Jan. 28 at Canton.
VHS had led by one at halftime.
�The King kid had missed his first 6 threes before hitting that one,� said VHS Coach Lance Luitjens of the clinching moment.
Matt Bedard scored 8 points, pulled down 5 rebounds and had 3 assists.
�Matt Bedard played a nice game tonight scoring 8 points and contributing on the defensive end, too,� said Coach Luitjens.
VHS jumped ahead 19-11 after the first quarter, but was outscored 14-7 in the second period and 10-8 in the third to trail 35-34 going into the final period.
�We put ourselves in a position to win the game,� said Coach Luitjens. �I was disappointed with turnovers and rebounds, but I was proud of how we battled back in the late stages of the game.�
The loss dropped VHS to a record of 4-6, while CHS junior varsity improved to 7-3.
VHS connected on 1 of 3 three-point attempts and hit 8 of 14 from the line. The Tanagers hit 15 of 41 field goal attempts, while the CHS junior varsity was 13 of 39 from the field. The CHS junior varsity sank 1 of 9 three-point attempts and sank 14 of 20 free throw attempts.
The Tanagers had several noteworthy individual efforts in defeat.
�Derrick Brown gave the defense a boost in the third quarter,� Coach Terronez said. �Brett Hogen went 6 for 6 on free throws.�
