Tanager varsity defeats Flandreau 73-63 Feb. 19 by Jim Prosser The Vermillion Tanagers beat the Flandreau Indian School Indians 73-63 in boys basketball Feb. 19 at home in a win keyed by a 27-14 second-quarter edge.
Cullen Iverson stepped up as a leader. He had 13 of his 19 points in the first half, including three 3-pointers. Bo Nelson had 20 points and 10 rebounds. Jordan Thompson had 15 points and 4 rebounds. Tim Russell scored 8 points and pulled down 9 rebounds.
�The boys are playing at the level they need to be at to win games,� said VHS Coach Troy Terronez. �These boys are having fun together, and their performances reflect this.�
The Tanagers jumped ahead 14-12 after the first quarter, led 41-26 at halftime, and then led 56-38 after the third quarter.
The Tanagers heated things up from three-point range, hitting 6 of 12 from long distance.
�The second and third quarters were definitely our best,� said Coach Terronez. �The desire and intensity level increased and the boys dominated. When the boys play at that level, they�ll always be in the position to win the game.�
VHS improved its season mark to 3-14, while Flandreau fell to 9-11.
VHS hit 11 of 18 from the line. The Tanagers made 22 of 41 field goals, while Flandreau was 18 of 31 from the field. The Indians sank 4 of 8 free throw tries.
A number of excellent individual efforts highlighted the win.
�Everybody in the game performed at a high level,� Coach Terronez said. �We received another solid effort from Tim Russell.�
