Tanagers fall prey to first quarter blitz by Jim Prosser The Vermillion Tanagers lost to the Canton C-Hawks 54-43 in boys basketball Jan. 28 at Canton after falling prey to a first-quarter blitz.
Tim Russell scored 10 points and pulled down 8 rebounds.
�Tim Russell did a good job on the boards,� said VHS Coach Troy Terronez.
CHS jumped in front 18-5 after the first quarter, and held an edge of 10-7 in the second quarter. VHS had an advantage of 9-7 in the third period to cut the deficit to 35-21 going into the final period.
The loss was aided by the Tanagers committing 20 turnovers.
�We had a little trouble with their press early in the game, but played well in the second half and got to within 3 points,� said Coach Terronez. �We missed a couple of free throws, however, and couldn�t catch Canton as time ran out.�
The loss dropped VHS to a record of 1-9, while CHS improved to 2-8.
VHS connected on 1 of 5 three-point tries and sank 18 of 26 free throw attempts. The Tanagers connected on 11 of 30 field goals, while CHS was 15 of 26 from the field. CHS sank 4 of 6 three-pointers and made 12 of 18 from the line.
Although defeated, the Tanagers had a number of fine individual efforts.
�Derrick Brown gave the defense a boost in the third quarter,� Coach Terronez said. �Brett Hogen went 6 for 6 on free throws.�
