Tanagers lose overtime battle with EP-J 50-60 by Jim Prosser Elk Point-Jefferson�s Chris Brusseau made a 3-pointer to send the game into overtime with 19 seconds left as the Vermillion Tanagers lost to the Elk Point-Jefferson Huskies 50-60 in an overtime battle in boys basketball Feb. 15 at Elk Point.
The score was tied 48-48 after regulation.
�We need to continue our balanced attack on the offensive end, and we must get better at identifying situations,� said VHS Coach Troy Terronez. �We played extremely well, but there were some simple mistakes down the line which allowed EP-J the opportunity to put the game into overtime.�
The Tanagers tried to stay in the game from three-point range, hitting 5 of 9 from long distance, but it wasn�t enough.
The Tanagers fell behind 15-6 after the first quarter, trailed 22-21 at halftime, and then led 35-30 going into the final period.
The loss dropped VHS to a record of 2-13, while EP-J varsity improved to 13-3.
VHS connected on 9 of 10 free throw tries. The Tanagers hit 13 of 26 field goal attempts, while EP-J varsity was 16 of 34 from the field. The Huskies made 7 of 14 free throw tries.
Although defeated, the Tanagers had a number of fine individual efforts.
�Bo Nelson performed greatly from the free throw line hitting 7 of 8,� Coach Terronez said. �Derrick Brown also had another solid night from 3-point range. Tim Russell, Cullen Iverson and Jordan Thompson played good team basketball. If there was a lapse in scoring, one of these three came through for the team.�
