Tanagers upset Wildcats 64-55 by Jim Prosser Getting an excellent team performance, the Vermillion Tanagers pulled away in the second half to upset the Custer Wildcats 64-55 in boys basketball Feb. 5 at home.
The score was even at 30-30 at halftime.
Derrick Brown was 3 for 4 in 3-point shot attempts, and 6 for 6 in free throws while dishing out 3 assists and creating 2 turnovers for Custer.
Making the ?right decisions from his point guard position was a real plus in exploiting our inside/outside offense, said VHS Coach Troy Terronez.
The Tanagers led 19-16 at the end of the first period, the score was 30-30 after the second quarter, and the Tanagers held a lead of 39-34 going into the fourth quarter.
VHS held onto the win from the free throw line, making 21 of 28 charity tosses to 8 of 10 for Custer varsity.
The Tanagers heated things up from three-point range, hitting 7 of 14 from long distance.
The Tanager boys communication was outstanding, said Coach Terronez. Custers Paulsen and Custis were rarely left unattended, and when they were, we still had players flying out to contest the shots. It was the type of game the players and the coaches were shooting for.
In the final period, Bo Nelsons 2 free throws tied the score at 41-41 and Brown traded 3-pointers with Bradford before making a 3-pointer which was preceded by a 3-pointer from Thompson and set the stage for the final two minutes.
In the final quarter, Custer trailed by 6, and was forced to foul to get the ball back. The Tanagers responded by making 16 of 20 free throws in the quarter. Fourteen of those 16 were in the final two minutes.
VHS now has a record of 2-10, while Custer varsity fell to 9-7.
The Tanagers connected on 11 of 20 field goals, while the Custer varsity was 13 of 14 from the field.
Several significant individual efforts contributed to the win.
Bo Nelson scored 22 points with 8 rebounds (2 for 6 from 3 point range), and 9 for 12 free throw shooting, Coach Terronez said. Tim Russell scored all his points ?inside the paint which helped set up our outside successful results. Our inside/outside offense got worked to perfection when the opposition ?collapsed on the center. It left wide open shots for our perimeter players.
