USD earns high marks at invite The DakotaDome was the location of the 19-team Hy-Vee/USD Track & Field Invitational Saturday.
The Coyotes will host the Graphic Edge Open next Saturday, Feb. 5.
South Dakota came away with four first-place performances and three were NCAA national provisional qualifying marks.
Matt Hoyt finished first in the one mile with a provisional clocking of 4:12.17 for the third-best time in Division II this season. Bill Gassen was tops in the shot put with a provisional throw of 53-8 which broke the school record of 53-7 1/2 set by Steve Schmidt earlier this season at the USD pre-season open.
The men's 4×400 relay team also met the provisional standard with a first-place time of 3:20.29. The fourth winning effort for the Coyotes was by Aaron Dykstra in the long jump (22-8).
Second-place performances by the Coyotes were turned in by Garrett Schram in the pole vault (14-3), Schmidt in the shot put (53-1), Dean Gillen in the weight throw (51-8 1/2), Mandi Muller in the shot put (44-1), Sandy Pelkofer in the pole vault (10-9) and Molly Wedel in the 3,000 (10:18.38).
The USD women also competed in the Minnesota Invitational Saturday. Leading the Coyotes was Stefanie Senn, who met the national provisional qualifying mark in the mile run with a fourth-place time of 5:05.0.
Tonya Kneifl was fourth in the high jump (5-5 1/4), sixth in the long jump (16-9 3/4) and seventh in the 60 hurdles (9.32). Amber Oolman was fifth in the 60 hurdles (9.08) and seventh in the high jump (4-11), while USD's 4×400 relay team came in fourth (4:06.39).
