Vermillion JV nips EP-J Huskies 19-18 by Jim Prosser The Vermillion JV Tanagers held on in the second half to nip the Elk Point-Jefferson Huskies 19-18 in boys basketball Feb. 15 at Elk Point.
VHS had led by eight going into the final period.
�It�s not often that you can score 2 points in the first and fourth quarters and still win,� said VHS Coach Lance Luitjens. �But we played pretty good defense.�
The Tanagers fell behind 5-2 at the end of the first period, the score was 7-7 after the second period, and the Tanagers led 17-9 going into the fourth quarter.
VHS improved its record to 8-7, while EP-J junior varsity dropped to 11-5.
VHS hit 1 of 3 three-point tries and sank 2 of 5 from the line. The Tanagers hit 8 of 24 field goal attempts, while the EP-J junior varsity was 7 of 29 from the field. EP-J junior varsity made 0 of 2 three-pointers and hit 4 of 7 free throw attempts.
The winners needed good efforts from several performers.
�Jon Brooks really handled the ball well for us,� Coach Luitjens said.
