Northey named USD Employee of Month Knowledge, enthusiasm and ability to create a friendly and cohesive environment have earned Eunice Northey of Yankton the March Career Service Employee of the Month Award at The University of South Dakota.
Northey, who joined USD as a secretary in the Office of Financial Aid in 1992, became the secretary for the USD Athletic Department in 1993. She was honored during a surprise ceremony March 3 at the DakotaDome during halftime ceremonies of the USD women's basketball game. USD President James W. Abbott presented Northey with a plaque and a check.
"It's the most fun you could ever have," said Northey. "The people I work with are great and the student athletes are the best. It is fun."
USD Athletic Director Kelly Higgins nominated Northey based on her ability to bring a common sense approach to often complex issues and willingness to lend a helping hand regardless of the task, time or effort needed.
"Eunice has truly been one of the most enthusiastic supporters and members of the athletic department throughout a period of great transition," Higgins said. "She has not only been part of the backbone of the athletics administrative office, she has been a great sounding board for me and the entire staff. Her support and knowledge has made it possible to move forward with needed change. Her support and knowledge of the job continues to grow every day, and she is constantly looking for opportunities to expand her abilities.
"Throughout my career in college athletics I have had the opportunity to meet many exceptional people, and my opinion is that she is one of the best I've me in her positions," Higgins added. "She is truly a Coyote MVP."
Northey, originally of Milford, IA, began working at USD in March, 1992. She has six children and six grandchildren.
