Parkston JV nips Vermillion Tanagers by Jim Prosser The Vermillion JV Tanagers lost a fourth-quarter lead and were nipped by the Parkston High School Trojans 36-34 in boys basketball Feb. 22 at Parkston.
VHS had led by five after the third quarter.
Nick Olson scored 10 points.
�Nick hit a big free throw to put us up one with only two seconds left in the game,� said VHS Coach Lance Luitjens.
The Tanagers led 18-11 after the second period, and then led 27-22 after the third quarter.
�They only played six minute quarters in Parkston, and we played great basketball for 23 of those 24 minutes,� said Coach Luitjens.
In the final quarter, a Parkston player hit a 30 footer at the buzzer.
�It was an amazing finish,� Coach Luitjens said. �They threw up a prayer and it was answered.�
VHS saw its record fall to 8-10, while Parkston upped its mark to 13-4.
VHS made 2 of 6 three-point tries and connected on 6 of 10 free throw tries. The Tanagers hit 11 of 30 field goal attempts, while Parkston was 12 of 25 from the field. Parkston sank 4 of 7 three-point attempts and hit 2 of 5 free throw attempts.
The Tanagers had several noteworthy individual efforts in defeat.
�Jon Brooks scored 9 points and made 4 assists,� Coach Luitjens said.
