SD splits with Winona State South Dakota and Winona State split a softball doubleheader played Friday in Vermillion.
Winona State won the first game, 7-3, and the Coyotes claimed the second game, 3-0.
For the Coyotes in the first game, leading the way was Amie Mertens, who had a single and a double. Julie MacRunnels delivered a two-run double in the fifth. Carla Hunt also had an extra base hit with a double in the fifth
In the second game, winning pitcher Tiffany Hill went the distance with one walk and two strikeouts while scattering seven hits. USD scored what proved to be the winning run in the bottom of the first when Jessica Bills drove in Hunt with a single.
In the third, Bills connected for a run-scoring double sending Janice Alswager home, and in the sixth the Coyotes added an insurance run on a home run by Maggie Gorman. Bills led USD's 10-hit attack going 3-for-3 with two singles and a double and she had two RBIs.
