Tanagers end season with loss to Panthers by Jim Prosser The Vermillion Tanagers lost to the Dakota Valley High School Panthers 56-50 in boys basketball Feb. 29 at home in the first round of the District 8A Tournament.
This was the Tanagers final game of the 1999-2000 season. The loss dropped VHS to a record of 3-17, while Dakota Valley improved to 15-5.
Jordan Thompson sank 24 points for Vermillion, followed by Cullen Iverson with 10. Iverson also grabbed 8 rebounds.
Jordan Thompson had it in his mind that he would do whatever it would take to win the game, said VHS Coach Troy Terronez. His offensive performance reflects this.
The Tanagers fell behind 14-4 at the end of the first period, trailed 22-16 after the second period, and then trailed 36-29 after the third period.
VHS lost the game from the free throw line, making 3 of 6 charity tosses compared with 15 of 25 for Dakota Valley. The contest was well-played, with the Tanagers committing only 7 turnovers and the Panthers committing only 5.
Had we not spotted Dakota Valley 10 points, the outcome would have been different, said Coach Terronez. Sometimes players want to win so badly that nerves affect the performance, and I feel that is what happened. Then, when the boys relaxed, we started our run.
In the final period, Dakota Valleys Shawn Reiff scored 5 points in the last 1:30 of the game to seal the win for the Panthers.
VHS made 3 of 17 three-point attempts. The Tanagers sank 19 of 40 field goal attempts, while Dakota Valley was 16 of 27 from the field. Dakota Valley sank 3 of 12 three-pointers.
Although defeated, the Tanagers had a number of fine individual efforts.
Our seniors provided outstanding leadership and spent every ounce of energy on that game, Coach Terronez said. These boys have a lot to be proud of: their improvements, their dedication and their attitudes.
