Boxing team is quiet but active The Vermillion Boxing Team has had a very active season, competing in nine matches but reporting on only this one. Last weekend, Vermillion hosted its second match this year thanks to these business contributors: Hy-Vee, Subway, Recuerdo's, Pump-N-Pak, Chesterman Co., Pump-N-Stuff, Pizza Hut, Hollywood Video, Bob's Amoco, Jody Harnois and Dr. Philip Tigert.
Only one of four active boxers was able to be matched for competition. That fighter was Oliver "Oli" Hope, two-time state and Region X (SD, ND, WY, MT) Junior Olympic Champion. Oli avenged a controversial decision to Pierce, NE's Mike Ronnefeldt by stopping him just over a minute into round one.
The VBT active members are Wahachanka (Chanka) Wilch who is getting off to a good 3-1 start, Karlis Baisden whose record is very deceiving at 2-6 since three of Karlis' losses came to Sisseton's National Silver Gloves competitor James Hook, and Trevor Turner who has yet to compete.
The boxers are geared up for the state Junior Olympics in McLaughlin April 28 and 29. Hope and Baisden will be competing at Cheyenne-Eagle Butte this weekend.
All of the boxers should be commended for their commitment and enthusiasm. They practice from 6:30 to 7:45 a.m. Without a doubt this will build character.
The boxing team thanks its sponsors who make the boxing program possible. Their sponsorship is truly an investment in these young men's future and deserves much appreciation.
