Girls' golf season opens with triangular match Intermittent rain and sleet showers couldn't dampen the expectation and enthusiasm of the Tanager girls' golf team to face the Brandon Valley Lynx and Yankton Gazelles in a triangular match on Monday, April 3.
Coach Kirk Hogen was pleased with the performance of his young charges on a difficult golf course (even under favorable conditions).
"We were able to score well as a complete team on a terrible weather day," he said.
The scoring format for the teams was different than usual since Brandon Valley entered only eight competitors while Vermillion and Yankton brought 10 each. To determine the varsity scores, the lowest four scores were used and the JV scores were made using the remaining four. Using this routine the varsity team results were: Yankton, 200; Vermillion, 218; Brandon Valley, 218. The JV team scores were: Vermillion, 242; Yankton, 252; and Brandon Valley, 273.
If the more common method of taking the best four out of five scores had been used, Vermillion would have won the varsity match over Brandon Valley also.
The Tanager individual scores were: Allison Stewart, 52; Karrie Plate, 53; Tabitha Hubert, 56; Terri Upward, 57; Kelly Peterson, 60; Brooke Nelson, 60; Ashley Bjorkman, 60; and Alison Obr, 62.
With the two "extra" golfers a dual match with Yankton was played and the Gazelles triumphed by one point. Jackie Thomas scored 62 and Drew VanKley finished with a 68.
The girls played Sioux City West at the Sioux City Country
Club on Thursday, April 6.
