Golf team wins one of two in dual The Tanager girls' golf team used the scheduled match with Madison to make up the cancelled match with West Central and play a triple-dual at The Bluffs in Vermillion on Tuesday, April 11.
The weather conditions were not conducive for low scoring results but the young Vermillion High School team brought in some excellent totals as they finished 1-1.
Allison Stewart and Karrie Plate again led the team scoring 45 and 47 respectively, followed closely by Kelly Peterson and Tabitha Hubert, scoring 49 each. Their total team score was 190, which gave them a victory over West Central's 208, and a defeat by Madison's 188.
The other varsity golfer competing in the dual was Terri Upward. The medalist with a 41 score was Katie Krauth from West Central.
The JV competition consisted of Madison and West Central comparing their scores against Vermillion's two JV teams in what can be considered a "double/triple/dual." The team scores were: VHS JV #1, 206; VHS JV #2, 227; West Central, 237; and Madison, 227; making VHS JV #1's record 2 and 0 and VHS JV #2's, 1 win, and 1 tie.
For JV #1, Brooke Nelson was medalist with a score of 49. Alison Obr had 50, Ashley Bjorkman, 53, and Jackie Thomas and Drew VanKlay sharing identical 54s.
The JV #2 was led by Sarah Christopherson with a 55, followed by Megan Deaver, 56, and Kaylee Heesch and Tera Dehner 58 each.
Also competing were Tyra Upward, Nicole Veitz and Ashley Thompson.
Coach Kirk Hogen explained the JV format as an internal competition, giving the younger golfers a chance to gain places in the positioning for the future.
"It helps to have real opposition for the girls, and they have responded in a very positive way," Hogen said.
