Pride of Vermillion bands rate superior at contests To accompany last fall's Division I ratings and third place, Class AA Quad-State and second place, Class A Dakota Days marching trophies, VHS Bands had a very productive spring competition schedule. On March 14, VHS Jazz-One received three Division I ratings and third place in Class AA at the Coyote Jazz Festival at USD.

The band was also awarded three Division I ratings at the Northeast Jazz Festival held in Norfolk, NE on March 28. The band performed The Deciding Factor by Jack Cooper, Deco Drive by Victor Lopez, and Cobblestones by Kris Berg.

On Wednesday, April 5, the VHS Symphonic Winds was awarded its straight Division I rating at the SDHSAA Region I Large Group Contest held in Freeman. The Symphonic Winds performed Skyscapes by David Moore and Men of Ohio by Henry Fillmore, arranged by Loras Schissel.

"This is the first year for a long time that the Pride of Vermillion Bands received a Division I rating in every competition they attended," said John Alpers, director of bands at VHS. "I am honored to be able to work with these students. They've worked very hard, and their work has paid off. I am extremely proud of our band!"

The last performance of the VHS Symphonic Winds will be at the Grand Finale Concert, Tuesday May 16, at 7:30 p.m. in the VHS Gymnasium. Admission is free and everyone is invited to attend.
