USD softball team drops four in home invitational The South Dakota softball team finished with an 0-4 record in the USD Softball Invitational that concluded Sunday in Vermillion.
The Coyotes, who are 16-12 on the season, lost Sunday to University of Mary (8-0), North Dakota State (4-2) and Minnesota State-Mankato (5-2). USD, which lost 2-0 to North Dakota Saturday, will host North Dakota State in a doubleheader Friday.
South Dakota managed only one hit against Mary � a single by Amie Mertens. Mary, which collected eight hits in the game, scored five runs on four hits in the second inning.
The Coyotes led North Dakota State, 2-0, through two innings on a two-run home run by Tiffany Davis. The Bison shut out USD the rest of the way scoring single runs in the third, fourth, fifth and seventh innings. NDSU outhit the Coyotes, 9-3, with all of USD's hits coming in the first inning.
USD and Minnesota State-Mankato were tied, 1-1, after four innings before the Mavericks scored three runs on three hits in the fifth inning en route to the win. For the game, MSU-Mankato outhit the Coyotes, 7-4. Carla Hunt paced USD with a double.
North Dakota outhit the Coyotes, 10-4. UND scored the game's only runs in the first inning on five hits. Davis led USD with a pair of doubles.
