Vermillion native wins national radio award

Vermillion native wins national radio award Michael Christopherson (known professionally as Michael Steele) was honored at the Gavin Awards Radio Convention in San Francisco on Feb. 9 as "National Music Director of the Year."

He is music director for KIIS-FM in Los Angeles, and works with popular air personality Rick Dees. Steele won the award in the Top 40 Radio category for major market stations.

The Gavin Report is a radio industry trade magazine that is generally considered one of the most reliable and credible trade publications for the radio business. Its annual convention and awards presentation is referred to as "the big one" by many industry analysts.

KIIS-FM is the number one FM radio station in North America, and was also honored as "Best Station of the Year" at the same convention. Steele has been with KIIS for one year, after moving from San Diego where he was music director at KFMB-FM. He began his radio career in Vermillion at KVHT-FM, and also did radio in Stockton, CA, Rapid City Omaha, NE; Charlotte, NC; Fargo, ND; and Riverside, CA.

Michael is the son of Dan and Gloria Christopherson of Vermillion.
