Vermillion's W.H. Over Museum showing Hartenhoff Exhibition The W.H. Over Museum is now showing the Hartenhoff Exhibition in Sletwold Hall.
The Hartenhoff Exhibition is a traveling art show consisting of the paintings of Gary Hartenhoff and the prints and paintings of his daughter Susan Hartenhoff. Gary Hartenhoff, born in Sioux Falls, developed his interest in art and landscape scenes in particular when he was still in high school.
In the later part of the 1950s he established Hart Signs and Graphics in Sioux Falls. In 1988 he closed this business and moved to California. His paintings hang in seven galleries in South Dakota and California.
Hartenhoff's daughter, Susan, like her father, attended school in Sioux Falls, received her bachelor's degree from South Dakota State University and did graduate work in printmaking at The University of South Dakota. She helped her father at Hart Signs and Graphics. She currently lives in Phoenix, AZ.
In talking about her work, Susan says, "My style of Cubism is almost like doing mathematics. I have to really sit and think it out. It's not something I can do intuitively. It's a big puzzle, and everything has to go in it certain order."
The show will be up through May 10. The museum is open to the public seven days a week, Monday through Friday 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Saturday 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and Sunday 1 to 4:30 p.m. Docents (guides) are available upon advance request. For more information Call 677-5228.
