VMS band students fare well at competition

VMS band students fare well at competition Vermillion Middle School seventh- and eighth-grade students participated in the South Dakota Bandmasters' Association solo and ensemble contest in Canton on April 8.

The VMS entries, instructed by Melody Hamil and accompanied by Stephanie Kocher, received 20 superior (I) ratings and nine excellent (II) ratings.

Four VMS entries received I+ratings. The I+ soloists were seventh-grader Laura Aga, xylophone, and eighth-graders Catherine Cafruny, flute; Zach Holoch, trumpet; and Jessica Leffers, clarinet.

Seventh-graders receiving superior ratings were: Sarah Anderson, flute; Molly O'Connor, Christopher Moen, and Bryan Smith, alto saxophone; Nathaniel Chandler, bassoon; Jacqueline Thomas, Michelle Rydell and Ellen Odson, trumpet; and Andrea Wingo and Sarah Anderson, flute duet.

Eighth-graders receiving superior ratings were: Sarah Merrigan, xylophone; Jessica Leffers, alto saxophone; Whitney Lawrence, flute; Sarah Gregg, clarinet; Sarah Gregg, baritone saxophone; Hilary Babcock, oboe; Hilary Babcock, snare drum and Collete Joy and Sarah Gregg, alto/baritone saxophone duet.

Seventh-grade soloists receiving excellent ratings were: Kate Renner, Theresa Dendinger, flute; Amanda Johnson and Krista Barton, clarinet and Charles Odson, snare drum.

Eighth-graders receiving excellent ratings were: Paul Abourezk, alto saxophone; Geng Wang, trumpet and Hilary Babcock, Catherine Cafruny, Lindsey Isaacson, Sarah Merrigan, Nicole Nelson and Theresa Ring, percussion ensemble.
