* Yankton at the Yankton Transfer & Recycling 23rd & Kellen Gross Drive.

* Clay/Vermillion  at the Clay/Vermillion Landfill, Hwy 19 north 2 1/2 miles and Bluff Road 2 1/2 miles northwest.

Funding for this and other similar cleanups on a countywide basis is being provided through a special $1 million appropriation approved by the 1999 Legislature. The special appropriation is funded in part by a tire fee paid during vehicle registration of 25 cents per tire up to a maximum of $1 per vehicle. The tire fee was established by the 1992 Legislature to help fund solid waste projects in South Dakota.

"Getting rid of waste tires will help beautify our state. We are offering residents this free opportunity to get rid of waste tires they have laying around in their yards, garages or farms. Waste tires are an eyesore and present an environmental hazard by being a fire danger, creating a breeding ground for mosquitoes and harboring rodents."

The waste tire collection event is free for residents of Yankton, Clay/Vermillion and Union counties. Tires from tire retailers will not be accepted free. Retailers may call for rates.
