VMS girls' track teams enjoy success at Canton A bright, sunny day was appreciated for the Canton Middle School Invite on Friday, April 28 involving Akron-Westfield, Beresford, Canton, Elk Point-Jefferson, Harrisburg, Lennox, Tri-Valley, Vermillion and West Central.
While there were no team scores reported, Vermillion's seventh- and eighth-grade girls' track teams scored some impressive victories:
Placers for the seventh-grade girls were:
In field events: Discus � Mandy Grimm third; Long jump � Anne Carlson second; High jump � Carlson first 4'5".
Anne Carlson won the 100M hurdles with Alisha O'Connor placing eighth. In the dashes: 100M � Kelsie Austin placed seventh; 200M � Austin third; 400M � Morgan Brooks third, Mara Johnson fourth.
Distance runs: 800M � Brittany Weydert fifth, Laura Aga sixth, and Jaime Bernard seventh; 1600M � Amber Kitto came in first at 6:15.66 minutes, Sarah Plate seventh.
Second place went to the 4×100 relay team of Sandi Winkler, Carlson, Jacenta Varns and Kelsie Austin, while the 4x400M relay team of Jaime Bernard, Alisha O'Connor, Laura Aga and Morgan Brooks placed fourth.
The eighth-grade girls results were:
Shot put � Michelle Coley fifth; Long jump � Heather Heine sixth; High jump � Kat Redlin fifth, Brittany Gilkyson seventh.
In the dashes:
100M � Nicki Nelson won with a 13.83 second time and Steph Bliss placed seventh; 200M � Nelson came in first again with a time of 29.84 seconds, Gilkyson second, and Brooke Johnson fourth; 400M � Heather Heine third; 100M high hurdles � Colette Joy second.
800M run � Brittany Gilkyson second, Ashley Hofer fourth, and Theresa Ring sixth; 1600M run � Kristin Kitto second, and Ring fourth.
The 4x100M relay placed fourth with runners Hofer, Bliss, Kitto and Joy. The 4x200M relay team of Johnson, Heine, Bliss and Nelson finished first in a meet record time of 1:57.35 minutes, and the 4x400M relay team of Heine, Kitto, Johnson and Gilkyson placed third.
