Will celebrate Howard and Margaret Connors of Vermillion, will celebrate the 60th anniversary of their marriage on Sunday, May 21. Friends are invited to join them and their children for a reception at the Vermillion Senior Center, 320 W. Main Street, on Sunday, May 21, from 2 to 4 p.m. Musical entertainment is scheduled for 2:30 p.m.
Howard Connors and Margaret Schmitz exchanged marriage vows at St. Peter's Catholic Church, Jefferson, at a morning wedding on May 21, 1940. They spent their first years together in Jefferson, and then moved to Vermillion where they have lived for the past 59 years. Howard was an educator, administrator and coach at Jefferson and Vermillion High Schools and The University of South Dakota. At the university, he spent many years in the math department as dean of men. He has been very active in sports officiating throughout the Siouxland area. Margaret also taught in the Vermillion Public Schools. She was honored as South Dakota Mother of the Year in 1993, and is an active artist.
The Connors have five children: Mary Ann Zimmerman, Iowa City, IA; Marjorie Kraft, Des Moines, IA; Robert, Grand Rapids, MI; Catherine Gullickson, Cedar Rapids, IA; and Carla, Tallahassee, FL. They are also parents of Patricia Rose, who died in 1944. Howard and Margaret have 13 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
The Connors will also be observing their anniversary on Saturday evening, May 20, at a Mass at St. Peter's Catholic Church in Jefferson, where they were married. They will renew their marriage vows at the 10:30 Mass at St. Agnes Catholic Church in Vermillion on May 21.
