Garden clubs hold convention Members of South Dakota Garden Clubs convened at Vermillion Travelodge June 15-17, for their 56th annual State Convention. National President Deen Day Smith, Norcross, GA, was a special guest.
At 7:30 a.m. on Friday, June 17, a "walk-rock-a-thon" was held to raise money for landscaping "Habitat for Humanity" yards. This is a special project chosen by National President Deen Day Smith. Over $2,000 was raised through pledges and donations. Rocking chairs were furnished by Cracker Barrel Restaurant in Sioux Falls.
At the Thursday evening board meeting, guest speaker Allen Harms of Yankton spoke about the Habitat for Humanity houses being built in Yankton.
Friday noon, Marcella Paulson of Hudson supplied gourd center pieces and told how she and her husband grow, cure, clean and prepare gourds for attractive vases, baskets.
Many garden plants, house plants, and seeds were available for purchase during the event. On Thursday and Friday afternoon, members enjoyed a guided tour at From the Ground Up.
S.D. Garden Club's Annual Convention #57 will be held at Hill City June 2001.
