Healthy Kids/Healthy Community

Healthy Kids/Healthy Community The Healthy Kids/Healthy Community Task Force met at 5:45 p.m. June 26 in the Sioux Valley Vermillion Campus board room.

Task force members viewed two videos at the Monday meeting.

They first viewed On the Edge provided by the Vermillion High School counselor's office, which explored signs and symptoms of depression that may lead to suicide.

The video included comments from youth, psychologists and counselors in several communities, including Pierre, which has experienced several youth suicides in recent years.

A counselor in the video noted that individuals experiencing severe depression should seek immediate help, and not be afraid to turn to a friend or a trusted adult, such as a counselor, pastor or teacher. It was also noted in the video that after a community experiences a suicide, the likelihood that another suicide will occur is greater. Hospitals, schools, police and parents need to join forces at that time.

The second video, Listen Up!, noted that 5,000 teenagers in the United States kill themselves each year, and that eight out of 10 people who commit suicide tell somebody first.

The video urged people to seek help if they ever hear a friend or acquaintance talk about committing suicide.

The next meeting of Healthy Kids/Healthy Community will be held at 5:45 p.m. Monday, July 3, in the Sioux Valley Vermillion Campus board room. The public is encouraged to attend.
